What Is a Blended Family?

Blended Family Definition

Also called “Step-Families”, “Blended Families” are families that are formed when a couple starts a family with children from previous marriages. Many aspects of the family members lives become blended together, and many changes are expected to happen. Blended Family Therapists can help families adjust to changes more comfortably, and address and blended family challenges that arise.

Blended Family Issues

Common issues may arise in blended families at any time – during formation or throughout the years. Underlying emotions, resentment, or feelings that haven’t been properly addressed may come out with stress, family changes, or everyday problems that blended families face.

When a Blended Family Has Problems with an Ex

Whether it be an ex-boyfriend or -girlfriend, husband or wife, if the family has a problem with the ex it can cause rifts and set a toxic or even harmful atmosphere.

There are essentially 2 problems at the core of every argument or issue in blended families:

1.) Whatever the actual problem is, and

2.) the underlying emotions about the family situation (good and bad). If the problem is “Blended Family Financial Issues”, and involves an ex-spouse or parent, there is sure to be conflict.

Life Changes in Blended Families

Life changes are times when the “phases” of our lives shift. Examples include:

  • • Starting or graduating school.
  • • Getting married or divorced.
  • • Moving or Changing Setting.
  • • New Baby, Pregnancy, Growing Families.

With blended families, your family is extended and more people share in these life events. More people makes for more complex situations, emotionally and literally. Feelings of resentment, shame, or unresolved feelings and emotions can turn happy events into chaos or put added stress on an already stressful period of one’s life. Any member of the blended family, or even an ex, can cause additional layers of either positive or negative influence on the family as a whole.
