But whether you tend to jump right in or spend the first few sessions getting comfortable, the most important aspect of group therapy is that you learn that no matter the size and heaviness of the issues; you do not have to carry them alone.
The thought of group therapy can seem intimidating or even scary; and it often is. However we grow the most when we step out of our comfort zone. This being the reason why group therapy can have such a positive impact. Group therapy provides a setting for you to receive support while lending support to others who are on a similar journey. Sharing where you are on your journey can have a healing component. Hearing where others are and how they trudged through the weeds allows you to learn from others. Group therapy allows you to see your situation through the eyes of others. The group setting provides a natural sounding board that can provide the room for growth you have been looking for.
Any any time throughout the year, The Arizona Relationship Institute may hold a single group therapy event, or a series of events & workshops. Based on your therapy type (grief therapy, couples counseling, cheating spouse support), support groups and group therapies may be available that match your needs. Groups are optional, NOT required for individual therapy sessions, and allow those comfortable with group therapy to grow and further their therapeutic experience.

Feeling alone when we are faced with problems is not an unnatural feeling. Whether these problems are regarding work, relationships or life in general we often believe that they are unique to us. That we some how deserve them due to something we did or did not do. Group therapy allows us to see we are not alone.
We can utilize these groups to learn from others just as they will learn from us. Using the diversity that groups offer can provide support in a way many do not expect. When we share our story whether it is about trauma, addiction, abuse or even self growth can have a cathartic experience . Talking and listening to others allows us to keep things in perspective. While or pain is our pain, we can learn from others who may have walked a similar road.
Support groups allow for space to learn strategies and coping skills not only from the facilitator but from the other group members. Giving and receiving support are both important notions in group therapy. Receiving support allows the group to bond. While giving support allows not only for growth of the group but growth for the individual members. Listening to others share similar stories provides space for self – awareness; not often experienced in other settings. At times sharing our story may seem or feel like a weakness, however hearing others share their story , we are often able to see their strength and in turn realize ours.
Remember just as with individual therapy, what is said in the group is to remain in the group. Just as you would not want others sharing your story, you should not share theirs.
You are there among people experiencing similar issues. If you are scared, anxious, mad…share it. This will normalize the variety of feelings we all have. Chances are you are not the only one experiencing these feelings.
Know what it is you are wanting to get out of the therapeutic group. These goals will allow you to stay focused and to get the most out of what others are sharing.
Remembering that we have all had struggles in our lives and group therapy can level the playing field. While members of the group may be diverse in race, education, age, and socioeconomics you are all there sharing your struggles and these should be met with open arms and free from judgment.
No one likes to have others feel sorry for them. However letting your group members know that you know this is hard and that you are willing to sit with them through the “hard” can provide an emotional safety net for feelings that can be overwhelming at times.
Many people do not like to speak in person especially when it is about something personal. However this is why you are here. At times it may feel that no one wants to hear what you have to say or that it is not important. This is not true. When we speak we never know who it will touch. What you share in a group session may be exactly what it is that someone else needs to hear.
